Overheating is a symptom, not a verdict
An engine overheats because heat isn't being carried away fast enough. The cause is usually somewhere in the cooling system, and UAE conditions make these failures more common:
- Coolant leaks from cracked hoses, radiators or water pumps, worsened by heat and age
- Failed thermostat stuck closed
- Radiator fan failure, especially noticeable in slow traffic
- Clogged radiator from dust and sand
- Low coolant that nobody noticed
- Water pump failure
Fix the cause quickly and the engine is often undamaged.
Signs the engine may actually be blown
These point to internal damage rather than a simple cooling fault:

Simple checks once the engine is cool
- Look under the car for fresh coolant (often green, pink or orange) or oil.
- Check the coolant level in the reservoir.
- Pull the dipstick and look at the oil. Milky or frothy oil is a bad sign.
- Check the oil filler cap for a creamy residue.
- Look at the fans: when the engine warms up again, do they spin?
If the coolant is simply low with no signs of contamination, a leak and top-up may be the whole story. Don't drive far until a mechanic has found the leak.
What a mechanic will test
- Compression test or leak-down test to check cylinder sealing
- Cooling system pressure test to find leaks
- Block test for combustion gases in the coolant
- Visual inspection of the head, gasket area and oil

What to do the moment the temperature gauge climbs
- Turn off the AC to reduce load on the engine.
- Turn the heater on full, which draws heat away from the engine, uncomfortable as it is.
- Pull over safely as soon as you can.
- Switch off the engine if the gauge reaches the red or steam appears.
- Don't open the radiator cap while hot.
- Call for recovery rather than driving on.
