Quick answer
You can sell a car with a loan in the UAE, but the bank's mortgage must be cleared first. Get a settlement letter from your bank showing the payoff amount. The loan is paid off from the sale, the bank issues a clearance letter, the mortgage is removed from the registration, and any balance is paid to you.
We buy any financed car, running or not
When a car is bought on finance in the UAE, the bank typically registers a mortgage (sometimes called a lien) against it with the traffic authority. That's why the car can't simply be transferred to a new owner while the loan is outstanding. It isn't a barrier to selling. It just means the bank has to be paid and has to release the car.
We buy financed cars in every condition, including cars that have broken down or been in an accident with the loan still running, which is exactly when many owners want out.
How selling a car with a loan works
- Ask your bank for a settlement letter (also called a liability or payoff letter). It states the exact amount needed to close the loan and is usually valid for a limited period.
- Get our offer and compare it with the settlement amount.
- Settle the loan. The payoff is paid to the bank, typically from the sale proceeds.
- The bank issues a clearance letter (often called an NOC or release letter) confirming the loan is closed.
- The mortgage is removed from the vehicle registration and the car is transferred or cancelled.
- You receive the balance, if the offer is higher than the settlement amount.
What if you owe more than the car is worth?
This is called negative equity, and it's common with damaged or non-running cars. If the settlement amount is higher than any buyer will pay, the difference has to be covered before the bank will release the mortgage. You'd pay the gap to the bank yourself, and the sale proceeds cover the rest.
It's worth knowing the numbers early, especially if you're relocating. Leaving the UAE with an unpaid car loan can lead to serious consequences, including legal action. Read selling a financed car when leaving the UAE and our guide on bank NOC letters and clearance.
