Leaving Dubai: the car steps that matter
Dubai is a transient city, and RTA sees a lot of departing residents in a hurry. The process is well-trodden, but a few Dubai-specific details catch people out.
- Check fines on the RTA app or Dubai Police app, including fines from other emirates that show on your traffic file.
- Check the loan. If the car is financed, ask the bank for a settlement letter early. Letters can take a few working days.
- Choose the route: transfer to a buyer, or cancel the registration for scrap or export.
- Sort Salik. Your Salik tag is tied to the plate. Check the balance and update the account once the plates are transferred or surrendered.
- Complete the RTA transaction before you fly, and keep the record.
- Cancel insurance after the transfer or cancellation. Some policies refund unused premium.

- Message us today with the car details, photos and your flight date.
- Screenshot your fines total and, if financed, your bank's settlement amount.
- Keep your Emirates ID valid and your UAE bank account open until payment clears.
- Don't agree to a buyer taking the car "to transfer later". Complete the transfer before you go.
