Is it actually engine failure?
"The engine's gone" is sometimes said long before anyone has proved it. Overheating in particular can be caused by a failed thermostat, radiator fan, water pump or a simple coolant leak. If the engine was switched off quickly, the damage may be limited. If it was driven hot for a long time, warped cylinder heads and gasket failures become likely.
- Get a written diagnosis if you can. A compression or leak-down test is far more useful than a guess.
- Stop driving it. Running a damaged engine can turn a repair into a replacement.
- Check the oil and coolant (when cool). Milky oil or oily coolant are strong warning signs.

My car overheated. Can I still sell it?
Yes, and overheating is one of the most common reasons cars reach us in the UAE summer. What matters for the price is how far the car was driven hot. Switched off quickly, the damage is often limited to the cooling system. Driven on, expect a head gasket, a warped head or a seized engine.

Replace the engine or sell the car?
A replacement engine, whether new, used or rebuilt, plus labour, can easily exceed the value of an older car. It can still make sense on a desirable model like a Land Cruiser or Patrol that is otherwise in good shape. The simplest test is this: add the full replacement quote to what you'd pay for a similar car with a healthy engine, and compare that with what you'd get for this one as-is.
