Quick answer
If you're leaving Dubai within days, send your car's details, photos, fines total and any loan settlement amount to buyers who purchase cars quickly, today. Choose a buyer who settles fines and loans from the price and completes the RTA transfer at handover. Keep your Emirates ID valid and bank account open until paid, and never leave the car to be transferred after you fly.
Relocations don't always go to plan. The car wasn't selling, a buyer pulled out, the move date came forward, or the car was simply forgotten among everything else. If your flight is days away and the car is still registered to you, this is the plan. It's designed to be fast without cutting the corners that cause expensive problems later.
Before you start: the one rule
Do not leave the UAE with the car still in your name. Handing the keys to a friend or buyer who promises to "do the transfer next week" is the single most common and costly mistake departing residents make. Fines, notices and any unpaid loan stay attached to you. Read can you leave the UAE with a car in your name?
Hour 0 to 6: get the facts
- Check fines on the RTA and Dubai Police apps, including fines from other emirates. Screenshot the total.
- Check for a loan: if there's finance, request a settlement letter immediately and ask how quickly the clearance letter can follow.
- Find your documents: Emirates ID, Mulkiya and both keys.
- Take photos: all four sides, the dashboard with the ignition on, the engine bay, the interior and any damage.
- Check your Salik balance.
Hour 6 to 24: get offers
Send the same package to several buyers who purchase cars quickly:
- Make, model, year and mileage
- What works and what doesn't
- Photos
- Fines total and loan settlement amount
- Your flight date and where the car is parked
Ask each buyer the same questions:
| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Can you complete the transfer before my flight? | The deadline is fixed |
| Do you settle fines and the loan from the price? | Saves you finding cash |
| Is collection free, including from my building? | Avoids surprise costs |
| How and when do I get paid? | Money must reach you before you go |
| What could change the offer? | Avoids a pickup-day surprise |
Hour 24 to 48: agree and prepare
- Choose the offer with the best net amount and a clear, realistic process, not just the highest headline number.
- Confirm the handover time and place, and any building access arrangements.
- Keep your bank account open and your Emirates ID valid.
- Arrange how the bank will be paid if there's a loan.
- Tell building management if the car will be collected from a basement.
Hour 48 to 72: hand over and close out
- Sign the sale paperwork.
- Confirm payment in your own banking app, or count cash.
- Make sure the transfer or cancellation is completed, and get the record.
- Update or close Salik.
- Cancel insurance and ask about any refund.
- Remove personal items, parking stickers and toll tags.
What not to do, however rushed you are
| Mistake | Why it's costly |
|---|---|
| Leaving the car with a friend to sell later | It stays in your name |
| Handing over keys before paperwork | You lose control of the car |
| Ignoring the loan | Can lead to legal action |
| Closing your bank account before payment | You may not receive the money |
| Abandoning the car in a car park | Fines and notices follow you |
| Accepting "pay you later" | You may never be paid |
When the car has problems too
A last-minute sale often involves a car that isn't in perfect shape: a warning light, an expired registration, a dent from the move. That's fine. Buyers who purchase cars as-is can still move quickly. Be honest about the problems upfront so the offer doesn't change at pickup.
If you really can't finish in time
Speak to your bank about the loan today, and consider giving a trusted person a properly worded power of attorney to complete the sale. It's a fallback, not a plan. See using a power of attorney to sell a car.
For the calmer version with more time, see how to sell your car before leaving the UAE, or go straight to selling your car before leaving Dubai.
