Moving an unregistered car
Don't drive a car with expired registration on public roads. It can mean fines, black points and possible impoundment, and it's likely uninsured. Arrange a truck, or sell to a buyer who collects.

The trap is renewing a car you don't intend to keep. You pay for insurance, inspection repairs and renewal, then sell for a price that barely reflects that spend.
Insurance when registration has expired
In the UAE, insurance and registration usually go together. If the registration has lapsed, insurance often has too, which is another reason the car shouldn't be on the road. When you sell to a buyer who collects, you don't need to buy a new policy just to move the car. If you do plan to renew, you'll need valid insurance first.
Cars registered in other emirates
The rules and the authority depend on where the car is registered, not where it's parked:
- Dubai: RTA
- Abu Dhabi and Al Ain: TAMM and Abu Dhabi Police
- Other emirates: that emirate's police or licensing services
A buyer who works across emirates can handle the paperwork wherever the car is registered.
How long has it been expired?
A registration that lapsed last month and one that lapsed three years ago are different situations. Longer lapses usually mean more late fines, a higher chance the car has other issues from being parked, and possibly paperwork that's harder to find. None of that stops a sale, but tell the buyer the expiry date upfront so the offer accounts for it.
Selling while you're overseas
Registrations often lapse because the owner is away, sometimes for good. If you're outside the UAE and the car is still here with an expired Mulkiya:
- Check fines and the car's status online if you still have access.

- Settle any loan with your bank remotely.
