If the car also overheats in traffic, stop driving it until the cooling system is checked, because overheating can turn a modest repair into engine damage.
Repair or sell: a simple example
Imagine an older Altima with high mileage that needs a replacement CVT. The repair quote is a large share of what the car would sell for afterwards, and the suspension and AC are also tired. In that situation, most owners are better off selling as-is and putting the money towards a replacement car. On a newer Altima in good condition with just the gearbox fault, repair can make more sense. The numbers depend on your quote, so get it in writing before deciding.
